Pachamama is the ancient Inca goddess of the earth and fertility. She embodies Mother Earth and is central to Andean culture and religion. Pachamama represents the nurturing force of nature and creation. Her origins stretch back before the Inca civilization to earlier Andean and Peruvian cultures.

Depictions of Pachamama often show her as a full-bodied woman with long flowing hair. She frequently appears with her arms and legs spread out, symbolizing her expansive and all-encompassing nature. Pachamama is also associated with the Andean condor, llamas, and coca plants.

As an earth goddess, Pachamama controlled planting and harvests. The Incas honored her through rituals and sacrifices asking for plentiful food crops. They also believed she caused earthquakes when angered. Pachamama’s shrines and idols appeared in homes as well as at agricultural sites and mines where people sought her blessings.

Myths around Pachamama reinforce her role as mother and nourisher. In one story, she suffers a long labor giving birth to the sun, moon, and stars before collapsing and giving the earth its contours and vegetation. Annual rituals at the winter and spring equinox focused on awakening and revitalizing Pachamama to ensure the seasons continued.

The worship of Pachamama remains prominent in the Andes today, with people offering her food, drink, and burnings before planting crops or breaking ground. She represents the enduring reverence for nature present in Andean spirituality and culture. Pachamama sustains all life, and her timeless significance reminds people of their bond with the earth.
