Fujin is the powerful Shinto god of wind revered in Japan. He is depicted as a demonic, green-skinned man with a snarling face and wild hair, carrying a large bag of winds on his shoulders. As god of the wind, Fujin has control over storms, typhoons, and tornadoes. His fierce gusts could destroy homes and fell trees, making him both feared and respected.

According to legend, Fujin was born from the chaos following the creation of heaven and earth. His first gusts separated the misty realm above from the land below. Another tale describes Fujin locked in eternal combat with Raijin, the Japanese thunder god. Their epic battles in the skies create fierce storms and lightning.

Fujin’s capricious nature meant he could help or harm humans. When the Mongol fleets tried invading Japan in the 13th century, Fujin summoned massive typhoons to destroy the ships. This Kamikaze or “Divine Wind” saved Japan from occupation. However, Fujin also destroyed crops and homes in fits of rage. Villagers made offerings to appease his wrath.

Despite his temper, Fujin falls in love with a farmer’s daughter in one folktale. To marry her, Fujin limits his storms to winter only. Their children founded the Fujinami clan, who claim descent from this benevolent wind deity. This story shows Fujin’s compassionate side.

Wild yet divine, dangerous yet protective, Fujin remains an important Shinto god. His winds can spread devastation or prosperity. By respecting Fujin’s power, the Japanese have endured storms and even gained favor from this forceful god.
